A Story, New Images, & Some Free Stamps!

***This is a long post... but try to make it to the finish... especially if you like FREE stamps!*** :)
____________________________________

My son Eli is in the first grade this year. He's the youngest in his class and has been struggling -- even though he is extremely bright. (and I'm not just saying that because I'm his mom!) :) I think we'll probably have him repeat first grade again next year. I hate the thought of it, but I think it will really help him with the rest of his schooling. We were studying Spelling the other day and I was having a hard time getting him to concentrate. He just gets so frustrated when he does something wrong. I kept telling him that he could do it.. and to just keep trying. And then.. he looks up at me with his big brown eyes and says, "Mom. Have you seen my Spelling tests? I never can get them all right." He just looked so discouraged. It broke my heart. Of course, I told him that he COULD do it! He just needed to really give it his all.

Eli came home yesterday and pulled this out of his backpack:

Yeah!!!! I was SO excited and you could see how proud he was (even though he tries to hide his smiles and gets embarrassed so easily). We had to display it immediately!

This is my first card using Kim's new set 'Foursquare'. The little note on the front of the card is detachable (held on by magnets) and is a perfect way to show off important things on the fridge!

The star was stamped onto patterned paper and is covered in Ranger's Glossy Accents. The sentiment is from Kim's 'Pet-Tootie Sentiments' set. I just inked up one word at a time to get the placement that I wanted.

Paper: Prismatics card stock (white, black, & red); Polar Bear Press (Cut Off Strip Collection)

Ink: Palette Hybrid (Black Noir); Adirondack (Red Pepper)

Accessories: Ranger Glossy Accents; Basic Grey magnets; hole punch; EK Success small corner rounder; Copic MultiLiner (to draw border); ribbon (unknown source)

This card uses images from Kim's newest release 'Silhouette Blooms 2'. I've been stamping 'cutesie' cards lately and I really wanted to try something a little more elegant.

The floral image was stamped twice in Willow ink -- and then once again with the ink in Lettuce. All of the edges are sponged with Latte. The paper I stamped on is called Silver Flake (by Prism). You can't tell by the picture, but it has a perfect amount of sparkle in the fibers!

*By the way... I had one of my readers ask where she could find the Prism/Prismatics card stock. All of the card stock can be found at Cornish Heritage Farms! :)

The ribbon on this card use to be blue! I used a Copic marker (YG03 Yellow Green) to get the color that I needed. I added light blue Swarovski crystals to the centers of the flowers. The left side panel is punched with a Martha Stewart eyelet border punch/embosser.

Paper: Basic Grey LilyKate line; Prismatics Suede Brown Dark; Prism Silver Flake

Ink: Adirondack (Willow, Lettuce, Latte, Espresso) (all from CHF)

  3. Wow, he has wonderfully neat handwriting. He sounds exactly like my son - gets so frustrated when things are not perfect and has just a bit of a hard time due to being dyslexic. Tell him there are other out here that are proud of him for sticking with it and trying hard. All we can ask of our children to do their individual best!

  4. Super cute display! Love the idea... my son is the youngest in his class (K) and we might have to go through the same thing... we'll see how he does in 1st grade... TFS your story!

  5. Awwww. My oldest came home from school in 1st grade and told me he was stupid. I asked him who told him that and he said "Noone, I figured it out myself". I felt so bad for him. He repeated 1st grade and is doing much better.

My youngest I decided not to even START him in kindergarten when he was five. He was born in July and was TINY for his size (less than 30 pounds) and the pediatrician suggested I wait. She said boys mature slower than girls and he would be the youngest and smallest in his class. So, we waited. And I'm glad we did. Now he's excelling.

Play up that A+! I'm proud of him!

  8. You tell Eli that he has the BEST handwriting that I have ever seen from a first grader (and I used to teach 1st grade)!
And it's ok if he can't get them all right, if he knew them already, he wouldn't need to go to school. That's what "learning" is all about!

Fantastic cards, both, Julie. I especially like the CPS sketch one.

  11. WAHOO, definitely a SUPAH STAR Eli!

Our daughter, Sophie comes home every Monday with a new list of spelling words for testing on Friday. Everyday we have a mock spelling test... if Soph should get one wrong, then we write that particular word five times after she's had a moment to view it! The other thing that's helpful is to see if there's another word or words within or a way for them to memorize it! *smiles*

Yes... we all learn at a different rate of speed, whether it's book, visual (me), etc...

    HUGS

PS... LOVE YOUR CARDS JULIE (definitely a Supah Star too!), but we know this post was about ELI! *wink*
