I Will Not Sass....

I found this paper a while ago and HAD to snatch it up. In a flash, I was right back in the 2nd grade. I will never forget that day. I was one of those shy kids who was soft spoken & always got straight A's --- until this fateful day. My teacher returned one of my worksheets and on the front was a huge "F" written in red marker. I was horrified! Right about then, I saw another boy go up to the teacher and I heard him tell her that he didn't realize that there was a back side to the worksheet. So... she just calmly gave him his paper back and told him to go ahead and finish it and she'd re-grade his paper. I saw my moment of opportunity and went up and asked her if it was ok if I finished my paper too (I didn't notice that there was a back side either... hence the big fat "F"). My teacher told me in an angry voice that I was not allowed to finish my paper late. I was so confused and said, "Well, didn't you just let 'so & so' finish his?". She told me not to sass her. Well... being about 8 years old, I didn't have the slightest idea what 'sass' meant & was even more confused, so I repeated myself. In one quick motion, my teacher raised her hand and slapped me as hard as she could across my face. I was in shock & SO embarrassed. I had inside recess for a week and my name was on the board for the duration (oh the horror!). My parents didn't find out until I was a joking about it as a teenager --- because when I was little, I didn't want anyone to find out. I have a feeling my teacher was lucky that I was scared half to death... or she probably would have gotten in some big time trouble. Good times, good times. SO.... now you see why I 'had' to get this paper. So... here is my card in memory of 2nd grade--- and now... you know the rest of the story. ;)

I used Annika from The Greeting Farm along with a Paper Whimsy notecard from Sassafras, ribbon from Making Memories & May Arts... and a little #2 pencil that I glued in place. This layout comes from CPS's sketch 117.

And... here is a locker magnet that I made for some of my coworkers for Nurse's Week using the Nurse Anya image. (hopefully I haven't already posted this? I can't remember.) :) The alpha is from PTI.

Thanks for listening to all of my gab! Have a good one! :)

  1. Hey Julie,
What an adorable card...and a great story to go with it! I'm so sorry you had to endure that in Grade 2--I'm a teacher, and couldn't imagine doing that to one of my little "kids". But I know what you mean about the shock of getting in trouble when you don't even know what you're doing wrong! When I was in Grade 7, a new French teacher started at our school. He was East European, and had been in a concentration camp. He spoke with a harsh accent and could make himself look as foreboding as "Dracula" by raising his eyebrows and bugging out his blue eyes. This one class he was writing something on the chalkboard and one of my classmates whispered "What time is it?" to me. I turned to show her my wristwatch, and my teacher turned around right at that time and violently spat: "What you doinck dere you Yahoo?" I had never felt paralyzing fear like that before or since! Man, it's amazing what happens at "school"!

  2. Oh my! I have horror stories lke that too, only no actual hitting. I remember I used to be a little bit of a "sass"er and I really wanted to be a "good girl". We came in from recess once and I saw someone had drawn big circles all over the table in pencil, so, wanting to be the good girl, I pulled out my pencil and started erasing the marks. I remember thinking that the teacher would notice that I was cleaning up and would reward me. Well, she came in and thought I had made the marks and was trying to clean them before she noticed, so she yelled at me, wouldn't listen to me when I tried to explain, and sent me to my nap mat without my snack. Nowadays a teacher wouldn't get away with yelling at a kid and depriving the kid of food, but oh well. I learned not to go out of my way to help people! lol! Great cards. I always love what you do with TGF image. Are you trying out to be on the DT this time? You should!

  3. Hi Julie,
Just want to give you a hint and maybe you already know this but, you can go into Lowes or Home Depot and go into the kitchen cupboard dept. and they have little tiles there with a hole already in the top for a ribbon they have about 3 sizes and the best part is they are FREE. You just can take what you want but i only take around 6 or 8 at a time and I cover them with my pattern paper what ever I want to match my card. I glue a magnet on the back and a-la it is all done. I put stickles on them sometimes too.
You have a very intersting blog.
    Hugs,
    Mary

  7. Oh my goodness!! I hate that she slapped you! When I was in elementary school a teacher got fired because he duct taped a kid to his chair!!!! And again the kid didn't tell his parents but some of the other kids in class told their parents! I was one of those shy kids too and I'll never forget the day the recess duty teacher picked me up by one arm (I was about 40 pouunds then) and spanked me all the way into the building because I didn't have my snow boots on!!! All I could do was sob and cry and try to tell her - but these are my "extra" shoes!! I mean that was the rule snow boots or extra shoes!!! I was in 1st grade and totally scarred for life!!

  8. What a wonderful card. Super Cute. I can see why you picked that Designer Paper.
I'm sorry that you had a negative experience like that in school that has stuck with you all these years. That was a very harsh punishment.
I do believe that Teachers should still be able to correct/punish children for bad behavior as there are so many children, teenagers and even adults now who have no respect for anyone because they've never been taught you have to respect other people. But slapping in the face is just WRONG!

  9. I LOVE your card...but OMGosh, that teacher was such a meanie! It makes me sad AND SO angry that a professional would do such a horrible thing. But then, apparently it didn't scar you for life. And I'm certainly glad about that! :-)

  10. Beautiful card ~ I just came from the Greeting Farm gallery and had to see the rest of the story!! (LOL) That is horrible ~ I went to Catholic school and my 2nd grade teacher was so mean as well and we all called her a troll!! (Not to her face of course!! LOL) Love this card though!! See what funny places create inspiration?
